Library Search - the new Library catalogue: Home

This page provides updates to staff and students about the new Library catalogue - Library Search.

What's going on?

The Library has some exciting news - we are replacing our old library catalogue with a brand new searching tool! This means that finding books and journals will look a little different, but it will be a much easier and more intuitive process. We hope you love it as much as we do!

When is this happening?

The live date for Library Search is Wednesday 3rd August 2022. From this date, you will find a Library Search box on the Library Homepage and you will be able to use the box for finding books and articles straight away.

Why are you doing this?

We decided that it was time to refresh our old catalogue - we had used the same system for 30 years but feel it's time to step into the future. Our new system, Library Search, is a form of "discovery tool" that enables much more powerful and effective searching and is more user-friendly.

Anything else I need to know?

Whilst implementing Library Search, we have taken the opportunity to review our circulation policies. In non-librarian speak, we have updated our rules around borrowing books. We believe that the new policies will increase availability of print books for everyone and you will receive fewer library fines and blocks. More detail about this will follow at a later date.

Key information

What do I need to do?

If you are a member of teaching staff and you have links to items on the old Library Catalogue in any of your Moodle pages or teaching materials, you will need to update these with links to the items on Library Search instead as the old links will stop working shortly.

Can the Library do this for me?

Unfortunately not. With the sheer number of individual modules and teaching resources across Newman, it would not be possible for Library staff to update your links. Every member of teaching staff is responsible for updating their own materials. However, your Academic Service Librarian will provide you with all of the training that you need and will be on hand should you have any questions.

When do I need to do this?

Library Search goes live on Wednesday 3rd August, so you can start working on this from that date onwards. All old links need to be updated before teaching starts as they will cease to work once teaching begins.

How do I do it?

You will need to search for each item on the new Library Search platform. Once you have found the item you are looking for, just copy and paste the URL of the item over to where you need it and delete the old link. Videos explaining how to use Library Search will be uploaded to this webpage in late July.

What does this mean for me?

The switch to Library Search should be seamless, so there is nothing that you need to do. Any items that you currently have out on loan will be transferred onto your Library Search account.

Once we've switched, you should find that you receive far fewer emails from the Library - the only emails that you will receive from us are ones that require action from you (e.g. return a book because it's been reserved by somebody else).

Once you start searching for books and journal articles using Library Search, you will find that searching for and accessing the resources you want to read will be a simpler process than it was using the old Library catalogue.

Once the new academic year starts, your Academic Service Librarian will visit you and your coursemates to show you how to use Library Search and answer any questions you may have.

Training materials

From mid-July onwards, this page will be populated with user guides and training materials showing you how to manage your Library account and how to search for literature using Library Search.

From August, the Academic Service Librarians will be offering targeted training to all academic staff, and from September they will also be available for workshops and teaching for students.
