Diversity matters: widen representation in your reading

Diversity matters - widen representation in your reading

Why?

We recognise that the library helps shape the academic and cultural landscape of our university. Our work on decolonisation and diversification stems from our commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment.

Decolonisation involves critically examining and challenging the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism within our collections, practices, and policies. By doing so, we aim to provide a more accurate and comprehensive representation of diverse voices and experiences.

Diversification ensures that our library reflects the rich tapestry of cultures, perspectives, and stories that make up the Birmingham Newman community. We strive to include materials that represent a wide range of identities, backgrounds, and viewpoints, fostering a space where all students and staff feel seen and valued.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive library is essential in empowering students from all backgrounds to achieve academic success. We are committed to promoting diversity initiatives throughout the library, and to working in partnership with students and staff across the university to achieve inclusive and compassionate curricula.
