Birmingham Newman University Open Access Policy

2.1 Our responsibilities

  • Provide training and guidance to Birmingham Newman researchers on how to make their publications Open Access by the most appropriate route.
  • Provide access to an institutional repository as a way to preserve, store and share all appropriate outputs.
  • Create metadata, complete license checks and set embargo periods for outputs deposited in Birmingham Newman’s repository.
  • Record compliance with REF2029.
  • Assess opportunities to participate in transformative agreements, which allow authors to publish Open Access at no additional cost or at a discounted rate.
  • Provide access to an institutional fund which may cover some or all of the cost of Open Access publication. Priority will be given to publications in fully Open Access journals which are eligible for REF2029.
  • Support Birmingham Newman researchers who are funded by external bodies to meet any Open Access requirements which are a condition of their funding
  • Encourage authors to choose the most appropriate publication venue for their work based on a range of criteria and not purely based on metrics.
