About Newman's Open Access Policy

Birmingham Newman University is committed to the principles of open research which includes the widest dissemination of its research outputs, for the benefit of society and to support academic advancement. As we work to increase the quantity and quality of our research, we encourage the adoption of Open Scholarship and in particular Open Access principles as a means of achieving this objective.

Summary of Policy and key points

  • The Open Access policy sets out the University's position on Open Access and the University's commitment to Newman researchers in making their publications Open Access
  • It details the general principles for researchers asking them to consider:
    • How they can make their work Open Access
    • Where to publish their work
    • How to make their work as open as possible, for example by making appropriate licensing choices
  • The policy is aligned with the REF Open Access policy, requiring all staff on academic and research contracts to deposit any new publications in the following categories in the institutional repository:
    • Original research articles
    • Conference papers with an ISSN
  • It encourages other research outputs to be deposited in the repository, such as:
    • Monographs
    • Book chapters and book sections
    • Conference proceedings with and ISBN
    • Theses undertaken at Newman and awarded by a Newman validation partner
  • For Newman researchers in receipt of external funding there is guidance on complying with funder Open Access policies including licensing decisions and sharing data.
