Our policies, terms and conditions and expectations for using the library

Introduction

The services of Birmingham Newman University Library are those outlined on the Birmingham Newman Library website. External membership is only available to those aged 18 years and over.

External membership and Birmingham Newman student status

  • You cannot become an External member if you are already a Birmingham Newman University student.
  • If you are applying to become a Birmingham Newman student you are welcome to join as an external member to prepare for your course.
  • If you are still an external borrower when you become a Birmingham Newman student, your external membership will continue to the original expiry date in addition to your entitlements as a Birmingham Newman student.
  • If you are a former Birmingham Newman student, you can join the Library as an External Member at a discounted rate.

Terms and conditions of membership

  • I will pay the membership fee shown on the Library’s website at the time the fee is due.
  • I will not remove materials from the Library unless they are issued to my account.
  • I will return, or renew, library materials by their due date.
  • I will pay any fines resulting from the late return of library materials, and understand that outstanding fines or charges may be referred to a debt collection agency.
  • I will pay the Library to replace any library material I do not return or which is lost or damaged while in my possession.
  • I will conduct myself appropriately in accordance with Library zoning and following the guidance on signs displayed in the Library.
  • I will disclose my personal details to a member of staff of the University when their request is reasonable.
  • I will not stay in the Library outside its scheduled opening hours.
  • I will not use any library card except my own.
  • I will not allow anyone else to use my library card.
  • I will not leave a child in my charge unsupervised in the Library.
  • I will not eat hot food within the Library. (Hot food is food that was served hot, whether it is hot or cold at the time you eat it)
  • I will clear any waste to the appropriate rubbish bins or recycling facilities.
  • I will not intentionally cause damage to library property or facilities.
  • I agree to be bound by the same code of conduct as applies to students of Birmingham Newman University. Specifically, I agree to refrain from:
    • Violent, indecent, disorderly, threatening, intimidating, offensive, disruptive or abusive behaviour/language.
    • Disruption of, or improper interference with, the activities of the Library.
    • Obstruction of, or improper interference with, the functions, duties or activities of any user of the Library.
    • Failure to comply with a reasonable instruction relating to discipline.
    • Action likely to cause injury or impair safety.

Penalties

If I breach these terms and conditions: 

  • I may be asked to leave the Library by a member of Library, University or Security staff. 

  • Following a disciplinary meeting with the Director of Library and Learning Services or a designated deputy, I may be required to: 

  • pay a disciplinary fine of up to £100. 

  • surrender my membership of the Library, and, in this event, I will not be entitled to the return of my membership fee. 

Please note: External membership of Birmingham Newman University Library does not give access to the computers, electronic networks or e-resources belonging to or licensed to Birmingham Newman University.
