Our policies, terms and conditions and expectations for using the library

Introduction

By requesting a Postal Loan, you are entering into a contract with Birmingham Newman University Library by which you agree to be bound by the following Terms and Conditions. These Terms and Conditions supplement, and should be read alongside, Birmingham Newman University Library’s Library User Policy, Service Expectations and borrowing rules, which are available on the Birmingham Newman University Library website. You also agree to abide by all Copyright legislation.

Eligibility

  1. To request a postal loan, you must be a member of Birmingham Newman University Library in one of the following categories:
    1. A student on a course of study at Birmingham Newman University.
    2. A member of staff at Birmingham Newman University.
    3. An external member of the Library with borrowing rights.
  2. Postal Loans are only available to addresses in the United Kingdom.

Making a request

  1. You may request up to 4 items at a time.
  2. You can request the following items:
    1. Printed books from the Birmingham Newman University Library collection
    2. Printed books from the School Experience Collection
  3. We are not able to lend you the following items by post:
    1. books that are available as e-books via Library Search
    2. inter-library loans
    3. reference materials and ‘Library Use only’ items
    4. School Experience artefacts
    5. laptops or other IT equipment
  4. We reserve the right to refuse to lend an item by post without giving a reason. However, common reasons for refusal may include:
    1. Your library account not being in good standing (e.g. you have outstanding fines or previously unreturned or lost items)
    2. There is a high risk of damage to the item if it is posted.
    3. The item is uneconomical to send in the post due to its weight or dimensions.
  5. We will contact you if one or more the requests on your submitted form cannot be supplied for any reason.

Making payment

  1. Once we have approved your request as per the above guidelines, we will contact you to request payment.
  2. Postal Loans cost £7.50 (inclusive of VAT) for each form of up to 4 items submitted.
  3. Payment for Postal Loans covers the cost of outbound postage only. It is your responsibility to pay for the return cost, or to return them in person.
  4. We will not process your request for a Postal Loan until you have made payment.
  5. You may pay:
    1. By telephoning Birmingham Newman University Library on 0121 387 4499 during staffed hours.
    2. In person, or by asking someone to pay in person on your behalf, at the Library Service Desk during staffed hours.
    3. Online via the e-store: we will email you with a link where you can make your payment.
  6. We only accept payment by credit or debit card.

Receiving items

  1. Postal Loans will be sent by the Royal Mail Signed For service, which requires a signature on delivery.
  2. Items will be posted by the next business day after your request has been processed and should arrive within 3 business days of postage.
  3. If you do not receive your items by 3 business days after your request has been processed, you must contact the Library.
  4. You must inform the Library if any items arrive in a damaged state.

Borrowing terms

  1. Postal Loans items have the same borrowing terms as items borrowed in person, including automatic renewals if applicable. See our standard borrowing rules for details.
  2. Once your request is processed and items are added to your account, they will be considered your responsibility.

Returning items

  1. Items should be returned to: Postal Loans, Birmingham Newman University Library, Birmingham Newman University, Genners Lane, Birmingham, B32 3NT.
  2. Once the items have arrived back at the Library, we will backdate the return of the book to the date of postage as indicated on the postage stamp.
  3. It is your responsibility to return items to the Library in good time. This means that they must be posted back to the Library no later than 7 days after the due date to avoid attracting fines. See our standard fines and charges rules for details of how this works with automatic renewals.
  4. You may return items in person or ask someone to return items in person for you, but the items remain your responsibility until they are discharged from your library account.
  5. You must package the items appropriately to avoid damage to them when you return them to us. We may charge you for damage caused to items in transit due to inappropriate packaging.
  6. You must pay the appropriate postage fee when you return items to us. If you underpay, we reserve the right to recover the excess postage costs from you.
