Graduating from Birmingham Newman

When you have completed your studies at Birmingham Newman University, please return all of your library books to us as soon as you can.

Failure to return your library books will result in fines and charges. Any unsettled issues with your account will be followed up in due course, and could result in a referral to an external debt collection agency.

Visit the fines and charges page for more information on fines for overdue items and charges for lost/damaged items.

Checking your Library account

We strongly advise that you check your Library account is clear prior to graduating. You can view your Library account, including any outstanding books checked out to you, by logging into Library Search.

If you have any queries about your Library account, please email us at library@newman.ac.uk. Alternatively, you can come and see us or phone us on 0121 387 4499 during staffed hours.

How to pay Library fines

You can pay your charges and fines at the Library Service Desk on level 1 (during staffed hours). The Library is cashless and can only accept card payments.

Alternatively, you can pay online via the e-store. You will need to manually input your charges and fines into the 'Amount (£)' section, which is auto-set to £1. Payments made via the eStore will not be credited to your account immediately. We aim to process online payments by the end of the next working day, so you will need to allow longer for your account to be updated over the weekend and during Bank Holidays / University closed periods.

Library membership after graduation

Your Library membership will expire shortly after the end of your course.

If you'd like to continue to hold Library membership, you can re-join as an external member. This will allow you to:

  • borrow up to 6 items at any given time
  • speak to Library staff if you require access to the Guest Wi-Fi

Sorry – you won’t have access to our:

  • open access computers or Birmingham Newman network facilities

Applications are subject to approval and there are some Terms and Conditions you will need to follow.

You should complete our external membership form. It will prompt you to attach a passport-sized photo which will then be emailed to us. We will contact you to arrange a suitable time to collect your Library card, pay for your membership and bring your proof of ID.

If you are unable to submit your photo online, please contact us to arrange a face-to-face visit to complete your application. When you visit us face-to-face, we should be able to issue your Library card immediately, providing payment is made and proof of ID is shown.

Once you’ve joined the Library, you can visit at any time during Library opening hours.

We offer discounted rates for alumni and former Birmingham Newman staff:

  • £25.00 per year or
  • £12.50 for 6 months
